General Granger brought the news to Galveston:
'The war is over! '
The Emancipation Proclamation has declared,
'All who live in bondage here shall be free.'
Every year in the land of the Lone Star State,
Resounding from sea to sea,
the sons and daughters of those who were held
shout: , 'Free at Last, Hallelujah, I'm free.'
Leaving their shackles where they fell on the ground,
after 300 years of forced bondage; hands bound,
descendants of Africa picked up their souls
departed for the nearest resting place.
Some went no further than the shack out back
hard ground for a bed hard labor to stay alive

Almost three out of every four men is overweight or obese in the United States -- with more than 30 percent falling into the obese category. World Environment Day 2011 slogans

World Environment Day (WED) is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day celebrations began in 1972 and has grown to become the one of the main vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.

This year’s theme ‘Forests: Nature at Your Service’ emphasises the essential link between quality of life and the health of forests and forest ecosystems. The theme also supports this year’s UN International Year of Forests.

A Linkage grant has just been awarded to Environment Institute Researchers, Professor Andrew Lowe, Professor Barry Brook and Professor Corey Bradshawto develop best-practice restoration guidelines for forest ecosystems to enable them to become resilient to climate change and maximise biodiversity and carbon capture outcomes. The grant titled ‘Developing best-practice approaches for restoring forest ecosystems that are resilient to climate change’ is for $405,222.00 over four years.

Habitat restoration is critical for ameliorating the ecological impacts of environmental change. However, existing restoration practices tend to rely on ad hoc rules of thumb (e.g. ‘local is best’) that lack a firm scientific basis, fail to account for future climates, risk wasting resources and will likely produce sub-optimal, long-term outcomes. The project proposes to improve current restoration practices by combining genetic diversity, fitness assessment and simulation modeling with large-scale planting experiments to develop best-practice approaches for species and provenance choice, and landscape designs that are resilient to climate futures. It will also assess planting outcomes in terms of market-based instruments for biodiversity and carbon.

Almost immediately after France fell to the Nazis in 1940, the Allies planned a cross-Channel assault on the German occupying forces. At the Quebec Conference in August 1943, Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt reaffirmed the plan, which was code-named Overlord. Although Churchill acceded begrudgingly to the operation, historians note that the British still harbored persistent doubts about whether Overlord would succeed.

The decision to mount the invasion was cemented at the Teheran Conference held in November and December 1943. Joseph Stalin, on his first trip outside the Soviet Union since 1912, pressed Roosevelt and Churchill for details about the plan, particularly the identity of the Supreme Commander of Overlord. Churchill and Roosevelt told Stalin that the invasion would be possible by August 1, 1944, but that no decision had yet been made to name a Supreme Commander. To this latter point, Stalin pointedly rejoined, "Then nothing will come of these operations. Who carries the moral and technical responsibility for this operation? Churchill and Roosevelt acknowledged the need to name the commander without further delay.

Happy Dragon Boat Festival In Singapore

Dragon Boat Festival in Singapore. It invites both national and international teams to race along in decorated boats. The dragon boat race crew consists of 22 athletic member paddling furiously to the rhythm of  a drummer sitting at the head. Participating can be rather taxing on the old knees; the technique does not require the team to row, instead, they sit on their knees and paddle. Ouch! Like so many other Chinese events, there is a story behind the dragon boat race and it goes back two millennia.

Both a Minister of State and a poet, Qu Yuan threw himself into the Mei Lo river unable to bear the corrupt government and abuse of power he witnessed by courtiers. Fisherman tried to rescue the much-loved poet sailing up and down thrashing their oars in the water to ward off hungry fish. They failed to save him but in commemoration of his honest character they cooked rice dumplings wrapped in banana leaves. They threw them into the water to appease the spirits of the river on the anniversary of his death.

Today

They still cook these dumplings, called Tsung Tze Ma Chang and throw them in the water on the day of the festival. You can still watch the ancient ritual of showering each boat’s dragonhead before the race. So, the furious rowing of the teams today mirrors the desperate attempts of the fishermen beating away the man-eating fish from Qu Yuan.

Their attempts may have been in vain, but the Dragon Boat Festival is a much more cheerful event today – a healthy dose of competition, ancient rituals all rounded off with some dumplings!

Getting There

• The Bedok Reservoir is a quick and cheap 20-minute taxi ride to the east of the city.
• Buses 18, 21, 22, 28, 65, 66, 67, 69 & 228 to Bedok Reservoir Road.
• Even better, if you are making a stopover at Singapore and have time to kill, grab a taxi from Changi Airport to Bedok Reservoir. It’s better than moping about the airport in a stupor.

If you should miss the event, the Kallang River, close to the Central Business District is another place to spot some dragon boat racing. They practice at weekends and you could even give it a go yourself.
