Themes of Easter sermons this year

The Sydney Morning Herald reports something that will probably be evident in churches all over the world this Easter season: is God behind the natural disasters that have marked 2011–dead animals, dead birds, dead fish, earthquakes–namely the New Zealand and Japan earthquakes–wildfires, and tornadoes?   What is the reason behind these natural disasters?

easter-clip-art

The Catholic Archbishop of Sydney Cardinal George Pell has focused on the recent natural disasters that have hit Australia, New Zealand and Japan in his annual address.

"Our humanity is defined by how we grapple intellectually with the challenge of suffering and evil or refuse to do so; but even more by what we do in response to these catastrophes when they touch us," Cardinal Pell said in his Easter Message on Good Friday.

He applauded the dignity, "strength and stoicism" of the Japanese survivors, as well as the heroism of those Australians who helped people during and after the floods.

Cardinal Pell said these values were the product of 2,000 years of Christian teachings.

"We don't leave people alone in their misery, but rally around to help, whatever their colour or creed or situation," he concluded.

Maybe more of us would do well to remember this instead of using Christianity for political and selfish ends.

Happy Easter, from GodDiscussion!

Easter Quotes, Easter Bible Verses, Easter Quotes for kids, Easter Thoughts

Easter Sunday is the culmination of the Christian season of Lent and the end of Holy Week, and marks the central event in Christian theology. To help embrace the spirit of rebirth and renewal that this springtime holiday brings, we've compiled several of the most common Bible passages associated with the Easter story along with some popular quotations on the subject of Easter.

Peru Holy Week

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead ... 1 Peter 1:3

Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead. Isaiah 26:19 ESV

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me." Matthew 28:1-10

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him. John 3:16-17

I think of the garden after the rain;
And hope to my heart comes singing,
At morn the cherry-blooms will be white,
And the Easter bells be ringing!
Edna Dean Proctor, "Easter Bells"

The joyful news that He is risen does not change the contemporary world. Still before us lie work, discipline, sacrifice. But the fact of Easter gives us the spiritual power to do the work, accept the discipline, and make the sacrifice. Henry Knox Sherrill

Easter tells us that life is to be interpreted not simply in terms of things but in terms of ideals. Charles M. Crowe

Easter says you can put truth in a grave, but it won't stay there. Clarence W. Hall

All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!
Lucy Van Pelt in Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz

I really like Easter. While the celebration is not as

over the top as Thanksgiving or Christmas, I like

everything that it represents -- new beginnings,

salvation, mourning that has turned into joy,

hope, a fulfilled promise, resurrection.

It's another occasion to be thankful and

to pass on the blessings.

So today, let's create something to share.

Earth Day 2011, what is Earth Day, Wallpapers

Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment. Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. While this first Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues. In 2009, the United Nations designated April 22 International Mother Earth Day.

earth-day

“This year we again invite you to celebrate Earth Day Sunday and share with your parishioners a story of creation care that will impart to them the importance of protecting a nurturing the planet that was provided to us,” the letter reads. “Earth Day Sunday is a great way to bring your parish together through community building and sharing the faith with those in the community while improving the world around us.”

The letter does add that if priests want to celebrate Easter instead, they could consider delivering a climate change sermon on the following Sunday. Michael Voris of REAL Catholic TV, however, is not buying it, calling the campaign a push for a “pagan takeover of Easter”

“Earth Day 2011 falls on Friday, April 22, which is Good Friday so on the following Sunday, which is two days later, the Earth Day Network wants Catholic priests all over the country to devote their homily to Earth Day. Slight problem, the next Sunday, the one after Good Friday, is Easter,” Voris said. “Imagine going to mass to hear about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead only to be told to go clean up a park.”

“I can tell you that for many years we have worked with Evangelicals and all faiths who have been involved in this movement,” a Earth Day Network spokesman told TheDC. “My understanding is that the letter really says the opposite, it says celebrate Easter and some other time do something for Easter and let us know what you are doing.”

ethdy-09

“This is what happens when church leaders do not stop this insanity dead in its tracks. Global warming is a scam. Its intent is to limit population growth through abortion, contraception, and sterilization,” said Voris.

The letter also includes a list of celebrities who comprise Earth Day Network’s global advisory committee. Among those listed are Al Gore, Leonardo DiCaprio, independent Vermont Sen. Bernard Sanders, Barbara Streisand, and Ted Turner.

World Environment Day 2011, Wishes, SMS, Greetings

World Environment Day  is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. WED activities take place all year round but climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere.

world-environment-day-thumb9328714

WED celebration began in 1972 and has grown to become the one of the main vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.environment_day_2

Through WED, the UN Environment Programme is able to personalise environmental issues and enable everyone to realise not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development. This year there will be a special focus on forests to celbrate 2011 as the International Year of Forests.

WED LOGO VARIATION 3

WED is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.

Everyone counts in this initiative and WED relies on you to make this happen – why not organise a neighbourhood clean-up, stop using plastic bags and get your community to do the same, plant a tree or better yet organise a collective tree planting effort, walk to work, start a recycling drive . . . the possibilities are endless.

Good friday 2011, Good friday Wishes, Good friday Quotes

I grew up Evangelical and although I certainly don't fit in with religious right stereotypes, my heritage is still important to me. But two recent news items have me wondering as never before: What's happening to my heritage?

good Friday 02

First came news that Donald Trump was garnering Evangelical support. He was interviewed by David Brody of Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network. Trump said he's a Christian -- a Presbyterian, in fact -- but admitted that he's not much more than a Christmas-and-Easter church attender. (Actually, he also said, "And during the Sundays. I'm a Sunday church person," which cast a strange glow of syntactic collapse over the whole interview.)

Of God, Trump said, "I believe in God." Of the Bible, he said, "I think the Bible is certainly, it is THE book. It is the thing." And of religion in general, he said, "I think religion is a wonderful thing. I think my religion is a wonderful religion."
Brody seemed to respond positively to this rather tepid testimony: "Donald Trump has piqued the interest of some Evangelical leaders. His bold talk is something conservative Christians like to hear." He added, "Remember, Evangelicals tend to operate in a world of biblical absolutes. Their world is very black and white. Not many shades of gray. That's how Trump sees the world, too."

good Friday 04

But then I came across an even more disappointing indictment, this one from a recent article by former Ohio Congressman Tony Hall. Hall, along with Jim Wallis and a number of other Christian leaders, is fasting in protest of a proposed federal budget which will disproportionately harm the poorest and most vulnerable among us while disproportionately aiding the richest and most secure. It will very literally reverse Mary's Magnificat, sending the poor away hungry and filling the rich with ever-more good things. Hall explains,

In 1993, as a Member of Congress, I fasted for twenty-two days, water only, to protest the lack of conscience of the U.S. Congress towards poor and hungry people. Now, almost twenty years later, the stakes are even higher, with Congress proposing budget cuts that will hurt the poor even more than the cuts provoking me to fasting and prayer two decades ago.

Budgets are moral documents by nature. They reflect the priorities of individuals, households and even nations, exposing our real notions of who and what is valuable. As elected leaders in Washington engage in shouting matches over how to solve America's looming sovereign debt crisis, the voice of the poor is still getting drowned out. They're obviously not our priority.
Every day 25,000 people worldwide die from hunger and preventable diseases. 50 million Americans go to bed hungry at least two or three times a month; 17 million of them are children. So when I saw a recent poll showing that my fellow evangelicals were among those most supportive of cuts to foreign aid directly benefiting vulnerable people, it broke my heart.

I think of voices like those of Tony Hall, Jim Wallis, Ron Sider and Tony Campolo who have been calling Evangelicals to action on behalf of the poor for more than 30 years. Then I think of people like Shane Claiborne, Rob Bell, Gabriel Salguero, Lisa Sharon Harper, Randy Woodley, Adam Taylor and others of us who have added our voices to theirs in more recent years. It's obvious neither the voices of the poor themselves nor ours raised in solidarity with them are being heard by most of our fellow Evangelicals.

Instead, they seem to be tuned in to Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Donald Trump, Ann Coulter and others like them. They've discovered that by speaking boldly in black-and-white terms, they can sway Evangelicals to their bold way, their complexity-free truth, and their highly profitable life.

In my travels, I constantly meet Evangelicals -- especially young Evangelicals -- who feel deeply marginalized and disappointed by their religious heritage. It seems to them to have become the chaplaincy for an alien ideology. The Evangelical movement seems to be moving in the direction of Mammon, not God; of Pharaoh, not Moses; of Saul, not David; and of Caesar, not Jesus. Their old identity is dying, and what will replace it has not yet become clear.

As we move from Palm Sunday through Holy Week, many of us feel that Good Friday is our dominant reality: the guys on the side of money and power seem to keep winning and the guys on the side of compassion and justice seem to keep losing.

So a lot of us really need Easter this year -- for ourselves, for our own spiritual health. Here's how I put it in my book, Naked Spirituality: A Life with God in Twelve Simple Words. When you're in the space of Good Friday...

...you do not feel heroic. You do not feel like a runner about to cross the finish line. You do not feel that a hopeful Sunday is coming after a nightmarish Friday and a blank, lifeless Saturday. You feel exhausted and finished. You feel as though you're fading, dying, letting go. And so you do.

But when you let go, you don't fall away from God. You fall into God. And you begin to see that just because the poor and meek get defeated on Friday, it doesn't mean the rich and powerful will inherit the earth. Sometimes (sorry, Charlie!), winning ultimately loses and losing ultimatel

World Heritage Day 2011, World Heritage Day Quotes, Sms Message

April 18 is the International Day for Monuments and Sites, more commonly known as World Heritage Day. According to the information on the official website World Heritage is the shared wealth of humankind. Protecting and preserving this valuable asset valuable asset demands the collective efforts of the international community.

Conservation of India’s millenia old cultural and architectural heritage will be the focus of the third Pupul Jayakar Memorial Lecture organised by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) here Monday on World Heritage Day.

World Heritage Day Monday April 18

This year’s lecture will try to throw new light on heritage conservation in India in context of the changing nature of preserving heritage in an era when it has to be commercially viable as well. Heritage expert Deepak Nayyar, a professor of economics, will deliver the lecture on ‘Rethinking Heritage and Restoration, Discovering a Small Inheritance’.

The conflict often resonates in the historic national capital, a classic example of a metropolis where history rubs shoulders with the present, both in its built landscape and its living cultures.

Conserving the metropolis’ rich archaeological treasure is a challenge, says a senior archaeologist and conservationist who has been associated with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which protects 172 monuments in the capital.

The Indian government in 2010 had passed a Ancient Monumnents and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Bill to amend an earlier law.

Under the new law, any construction – whether private or government – within 100 meters of a protected monument is punishable if it is done without the clearance of the ASI.

It says that if a resident lives within 100 metres of any centrally-protected heritage structure without permission, under the new law, he can be jailed for two years or be forced to pay Rs.100,000 as penalty. Only basic repairs can be carried out in such houses.

A conservation expert said the law has ‘led to a virtual citizens’ unrest in several areas of Delhi where residential neighbourhoods have sprung up within 100 metres’.

Residents who have been living in these localities for years find it a hindrance to ‘their daily livelihood’.

The ASI has been trying to find a way to ’sort out the impasse and misgivings by inviting community participation of conservation of heritage and by raising awareness’, a spokesperson said.

The INTACH, formed in 1984 as a non-profit national heritage conservation platform, has been playing a crucial role in building awareness about heritage at the micro-level with projects, seminars, lectures and exhibitions.

An exhibition, ‘Delhi: A Living Heritage’, supported by INTACH, had tried to link the capital’s cultural heritage with its built heritage in 2010 by collating data from INTACH’s Delhi archives. It showed the city’s evolution as a capital from 1450 BC till date – assimilating various cultures for the last 2,500 years.

The capital has been known to have been continuously inhabited since the second millenium BC. It is widely believed to be the site of Indraprashtha – the legendary capital of the Pandavas during Mahabharata.

Delhi became a major political, cultural and commercial city along the trade routes between northwest India and the Gangetic plains after the rise of the Delhi Sultanate. In 1639, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built the walled city of Delhi which served as the capital from 1649 to 1853.

During the British rule, the capital shifted to Kolkata for nearly 200 years, till King George V restored Delhi to its former glory as the capital city in 1911. The city of New Delhi was built in the 1920s.

Palm Sunday Greetings, Meaning, Wallpapers

Palm Sunday always falls on the Sunday before Easter Sunday. The feast commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem an event mentioned by all four Canonical Gospels namely Mark 11:1-11, Matthew 21:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, and John 12:12-19. Palm Sunday is marked by the distribution of palm leaves (often tied into crosses) to the assembled worshipers.

Palm Sunday, often referred to as “Passion Sunday”, marks the beginning of Holy Week, which concludes on Easter Sunday.

The Bible reveals that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted him by waving palm branches and covering his path with palm branches. Immediately following this great time of celebration in the ministry of Jesus, he begins his journey to the cross.

Today Jackie Robinson Day 2011

Major League Baseball is celebrating Jackie Robinson Day today, 64 years after Jackie broke the color barrier in baseball. If you go to  you can see video of several current and former major league players speak about Jackie Robinson including Jose Bautisa, Andre Dawson, Lou Brock and Kevin Millar. All players and coaches will be wearing Robinson's number 42 today.

feature_jackie

As a player, ignoring his place in history, he was special. He didn't get to the majors (because of the stupidity of the times, until the age of 28 and still he had a 10 year career with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He retired with a batting line of   .311/.409/.474. He stole 197 bases, including 19 (!) steals of home. He played good defense at second base most of his career. He won the Rookie of the Year in 1947, NL MVP in 1949 and made 6 All-Star teams.

Generally, sports are just sports. Jackie on the other hand, was more important than just baseball. He gave a face to the whole civil rights movement. He changed it from being just a political issue something that people could understand as more than just an idea. It is hard to believe that such a relatively short time ago the world was so much different.

Vaisakhi (Punjabi vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi or Vasakhi) is an ancient harvest festival in the Punjab region, which also marks beginning of a new solar year, and new harvest season. Baisakhi is a Sikh religious festival. It falls on the first day of the Baisakh month in the solar Nanakshahi calendar, In Sikhism, it is one of the most significant holidays in the Sikh calendar, commemorating the establishment of the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib in 1699, by the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.

Baisakhi-2011-1

To mark the celebrations, devotees, irrespective of Sikh religion, attend the gurdwara, a Sikh place of worship. The celebrations start early as devotees, with flowers and offerings in their hands, proceed towards the gurdwara before dawn. Processions through towns are also common. Baisakhi is the day on which the Khalsa (The Pure Ones) was born and Sikhs were given a clear identity and a code of conduct to live by. The momentous occasion was led by the last living Sikh spiritual teacher, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who baptized the first Sikhs using sweet nectar called Amrit. Around the world at Baisakhi time, Sikhs and individuals of Punjabi descent reflect on the values taught to them by their gurus and celebrate the birth of the Khalsa.
